Embark on the Lemosho Route: Kilimanjaro’s Scenic Adventure
Known as the Whisky Route, the Lemosho Route is celebrated for its stunning vistas and diverse landscapes. This popular path begins in lush tropical forests, ascends through dramatic ridges and moorlands, and showcases spectacular sunsets at Shira Plateau. The route’s highlights include the awe-inspiring Barranco Wall and the glaciated Southern Ice Fields.
The Lemosho Route, a majestic 70 kilometers (42 miles) trek, takes you from the lush forests to the iconic Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). Starting at Lemosho Gate on the western slopes, this route combines stunning landscapes with a rewarding descent via the Mweka Route.

Tour Plan
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to Gold Crest Hotel in Arusha for an evening briefing and check-in
Depart Moshi and drive to Londorossi Gate, where you complete entry formalities. Another hour takes you to the Lemosho trailhead. After a hearty lunch, start your adventure through the lush, undisturbed forest to your first campsite.

Leave the forest behind and ascend into a world of tall grasses and volcanic rock. Cross streams and roll through lush hills to reach Shira Ridge. Relax at Shira 1 camp, where the views of Kibo Peak are nothing short of breathtaking.

Hiking Time: 5-6 hours

Explore the Shira Plateau on a gentle walk towards Kibo’s glacier. Enjoy the stunning views as you reach Shira 2 camp, then continue to Moir Hut, nestled at the base of Lent Hills. This day is crucial for acclimatization and offers unique walks on the Lent Hills.

Venture east from the Moir Hut up to the Lava Tower, or “Shark’s Tooth,” and then descend to Barranco Camp. This day’s dramatic ascent and descent help with acclimatization, setting you up perfectly for the summit push.

Habitat: Semi Desert
Tackle the Barranco Wall and continue to Karanga Camp. This short but invigorating hike is designed for further acclimatization, offering stunning views of the surrounding alpine desert.

Habitat: Alpine Desert
Ascend to Barafu Camp via the Mweka Trail junction. From here, marvel at the panoramic views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Rest, refuel, and prepare for your final summit push.

Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Set off in the early hours for the summit. Navigate through scree and snow to Stella Point, where you’re greeted with an unforgettable sunrise. Push to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, and then descend to Mweka Hut, where you'll enjoy your final night on the mountain.
Elevation: 15,300ft to 19,345ft (then down to 10,000ft)
Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent
Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent
Habitat: Arctic
Descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate. Continue to Mweka Village, and then take a transfer back to your hotel in Arusha, filled with incredible memories and a sense of accomplishment.
